America: In The Beginning - Part 7
Introduction Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6 Part 7 Part 8 Part 9 Part 10

Tightly integrated into a musically consistent theme, all pure AMERICA, HAT TRICK was launched. The choice of GEORGE MARTIN (formally the Beatles producer) was made for the next LP. A meeting was arranged when GEORGE was in LA for some kind of academy award show. He listened to some of the songs planned for the HOLIDAY LP & took quite a liking to the "lads". He said he'd go for it. The big issue was that he wanted to record the LP in merry ol' England, rather than get hung up in LA for an extended period of time. He had heard that AMERICA spends a long time recording their LP's, perfectionists to the letter. AMERICA rehearsed & refined like crazy before heading off to ol' England. They stunned ol' GEORGE by completing all aspects of the LP in about 15 working days. It was not easy to stun GEORGE, Paul M. & John L. had thickened his skin considerably. The result was the LP HOLIDAY, which featured the smash hit written by DEWEY, TIN MAN, & DAN's hit, LONELY PEOPLE. It also featured DEWEY's very popular & warm song of youth & memories, OLD MAN TOOK. GERRY contributed the outstanding BABY IT'S UP TO YOU, ANOTHER TRY, & WHAT DOES IT MATTER. GERRY also wrote the fabulous opening instrumental interlude to TIN MAN; a contribution similar to the opening of YOUNG MOON on their newest CD HOURGLASS.
